Honokohau Stream and Bay Survey
Maui, Hawaii

Overview:

SWCA conducted biological characterizations of Honokohau and nearby Honolua Streams in northwest Maui to assess the pros and cons to the streams and their respective embayments of supplemental flow releases below two century-old diversion weirs. An annual program was established to monitor the population biology of native amphidromous species in Honokohau Stream following release of continuous flow below an existing diversion dam. In a companion study, SWCA developed recommendations for formal interim instream flow standards for both Honokohau and Honolua Streams for presentation to the state Commission on Water Resources Management.
