Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) Documentation for Childs-Irving Hydroelectric Facilities
Yavapai City, Arizona

Overview:

Arizona Public Service Company (APS) owns and operates the Childs-Irving Hydroelectric Facilities, which are located on land administered by Coconino and Tonto National Forests in Arizona. When APS proposed to decommision and deconstruct the facilities, SWCA was retained to assist with documentation for the thirty-two elements of the facilities which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Services Provided:

Prepared documentation for the facilities' inclusion in the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) at the Library of Congress

Results:
By conducting oral histories with Childs-Irving veteran employees, SWCA was able to prepare a thorough report with a simple, yet comprehensive explanation of the hydroelectric system. In 2006, APS won a Governor's Award for Historic Preservation for the HAER documentation and retention of the Childs powerhouse for public interpretation.
