Archaeological Data Recovery at the McKinney Roughs Site
Bastrop County, Texas

Overview:

SWCA was contracted by Woodbine Development Corporation to conduct archaeological data recovery of a prehistoric site on former Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) property along the Colorado River. Woodbine proposed to develop a resort and golf course on a parcel of land that adjoins the LCRA McKinney Roughs Preserve. The goal of the work was to determine the significance and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility for the site and conduct mitigative data recovery work prior to the resort construction.

Services Provided:

  • Archaeological excavations, including backhoe trenching and hand excavation of large horizontal blocks

Results:

SWCA’s archaeological assessment identified cultural materials dating to the Late Archaic period in several well-stratified components. The site was recommended as eligible for listing on the NRHP and designation as a State Archaeological Landmark.

At the Texas Historical Commission (THC) Archaeology Committee meeting, SWCA received the THC Award of Merit in Archaeology, which "recognizes the efforts/contributions of an individual or organization involved in preserving Texas' cultural and historical resources.” The Award was presented for research and report production associated with the investigations at the McKinney Roughs Site.
