Cultural and Biological Services for the Jerritt Canyon Mine, Nevada
Elko City, Nevada
Overview:
In support of potential minerals exploration, Queenstake Resources USA retained SWCA to conduct a Class III cultural resources inventory of more than 4,000 acres of land owned by both the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and private landowners in the Independence Mountains of Elko County, Nevada.
Services Provided:
- Conducted a cultural resources inventory
- Completed threatened, endangered, and sensitive species inventories
- Prepared a biological assessment/biological evaluation (BA/BE)
- Evaluated the distribution and status of seven plants on the Nevada Natural Heritage Program “watch list,” and assessed the species composition and relative abundance of birds nesting in riparian habitats
Results:
From the onset of this project, Queenstake Resources USA had an extremely tight schedule. Drawing on multiple offices, SWCA was able to mobilize numerous, rotating crews to conduct a non-stop field inventory that was completed in less than six weeks. The inventory was conducted to BLM standards and identified prehistoric and historical cultural resources. SWCA also worked closely with BLM staff to expedite the report preparation and submission process. The speed and efficiency of SWCA staff helped the client save money and important project time.
