Overview:
SWCA was retained by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) to design and implement an environmental compliance program for the rebuild of a 38-mile segment of U.S. Highway 70.
Services Provided:
· Developed plans for visual impact and wetlands mitigation; cultural resource properties protection; and wildlife, migratory bird, and threatened and endangered species protection
· Coordinated with project engineers and designers to incorporate avoidance and mitigation measures into the project plans
· Created public outreach materials
Results:
SWCA made rapid data recovery efforts in order to mitigate impacts to 20 archaeological sites where resources were discovered during construction. SWCA also prepared and presented information about Hondo Valley history to the general public. Public outreach deliverables included audio recording of oral histories and local music, booklets summarizing the historical significance of the Valley, production and distribution of a teaching module for the local public schools, a fold-up poster/brochure and a mobile display of Hondo Valley history and archaeology.
