Overview
SWCA wasasked by the Arizona Army National Guard to provide archaeological and ethnographic services for the Camp Navajo training facility.
Services Provided
· Completion of a 25,000 acre archaeological survey
· Updated the site records from previous archaeological investigations
· Ethnohistoric research, including interviews with former Navajo and Hopi residents
· Created public outreach materials, including displays and brochures
Results
Nearly 275 archaeological sites were documented at Camp Navajo; about half of which can be recommended as eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2009, Camp Navajo won the Secretary of the Army’s annual Award for Cultural Resources Management by an Installation.
