Navajo Roads Ethnographical and Archaeological Projects

Overview:
Since 1993, SWCA has had an indefinite services contract with the Navajo Nation Historic Preservation Department (NNHPD) Roads Planning Program (RPP) to conduct ethnographic and archaeological investigations for highway improvement projects funded by the Branch of Roads, Navajo Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).

  • Ethnographic research
  • Tribal consultation
  • Archaeological survey, testing, and data recovery

Results:
During these projects, SWCA has investigated 79 miles of road, recorded 190 sites, tested 64 sites, and conducted archaeological data recovery at 21 sites. SWCA has prepared technical reports on every phase of work, and RPP has praised us for our consistently "clean and thorough" reports. Furthermore, the findings from our archaeological investigations have been disseminated in numerous publications and presentations, which provide important information to the archaeological community and the general public and have enhanced the reputation of the RPP.
