EIS for Juneau International Airport

Overview:
The City and Borough of Juneau contracted SWCA to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the expansion of runways at the Juneau, Alaska International Airport. Runway expansion is needed in order for the airport to comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
 
Services Provided:
· Wetland delineation and mapping
· Assessed wetland function using the Adamus Wetland Evaluation Technique
· Coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service in formulating a biological assessment addressing threatened and endangered terrestrial, freshwater and marine species
· Coordinated public involvement activities
· Prepared EIS and coordinated NEPA process
· Developed a conceptual mitigation package
 
 
Results:
The highly educated and socially active citizens of Juneau had strong and diverse opinions regarding airport improvement. SWCA staff members were an integral part of the public involvement team that worked to keep local stakeholders informed throughout this project. SWCA also designed and updated a web site (www.jnu-eis.org) that gave project updates and allowed for public comments regarding the EIS. The client commended SWCA for our ability to provide accurate information to the public and dispel rumors quickly as well as coordinate with multiple agencies at the local, state and federal levels.
