Gatlin Site Data Recovery
Kerr County, Texas
Overview:
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) retained SWCA to conduct data recovery excavations at the Gatlin site (41KR621) for construction of a roadway (Spur 98) and associated bridge spanning the Guadalupe River near the City of Kerrville in Kerr County.
Services Provided:
- Section 106 compliance
- Data recovery
- Subsurface mechanical explorations
- Hand excavations
- Special sampling
- Geomorphology
Results:
SWCA successfully mitigated impacts at the construction site by recovering large amounts of data related to
prehistoric occupations spanning thousands of years, from the Early Archaic
to Late Archaic periods. This project required SWCA to operate in a restricted time frame to ensure that TxDOT could begin construction on time.
SWCA was able to quickly mobilize large crews and conduct the large excavation project within the project schedule. The client noted our efficient work and subsequently contracted SWCA to conduct artifact analysis, report preparation, and curation of the data recovery materials. This multi-year project
is on-going and involves numerous deliverables, which will culminate in a final report and a public web page detailing the results of the investigations.
