East Maui Streams
Maui, Hawaii

Overview:
SWCA was tasked by Morihara Lau and Fong, LLC to prepare a white paper
discussing the historical and current status of Hawaii’s amphidromous stream fauna, review the multitude and relative severity of historical and current threats, and discuss the effects of historical patterns of water withdrawal upon these species. Concurrent with the development of the white paper,

SWCA was retained by the law firm of Oshima Chun Fong & Chung to determine the impacts of stream diversion on native Hawaiian aquatic animals. The project is being conducted in support of a request to obtain a 30-year lease from the State of Hawaii Commission on Water Resources Management to continue withdrawing surface waters from East Maui streams.

Services Provided:

  • Scientific literature review and annotated bibliography
  • Critical review of ongoing U.S. Geological Survey studies in East Maui
  • Independent ecological research
  • Instream flow assessments and IFS recommendation

Results:

SWCA studies complement the concurrent research of the Honolulu Water Resources Offices of the U.S. Geological Survey and will ultimately be used to aid in decision-making by the Hawaii Commission on Water Resources Management. The project is ongoing.
