
EIS for the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez International Airport, Alaska

Overview:
SWCA is participating in cultural and natural resource studies in support of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the expansion of the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez International Airport, which is located on lands significant to the Sitka Tribe of Alaska. The EIS is driven by the need to address runway safety and comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. It will focus on issues such as safety requirements; aircraft noise; wetlands and possible mitigation programs; essential fish habitat; marine resources; seawall construction, stormwater and discharge concerns; socioeconomic impacts to subsistence fisheries and potential impacts to archaeological sites and cultural resources.

- Collected data on the ethnographic and historical uses of the airport facility and airport lands
- On-site archaeological inventories and inventory updates
- Evaluated potential impacts of proposed projects on two National Register historic districts
- Prepared and submitted a technical report to the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office (ASHPO) on behalf of the FAA, as part of Section 106 compliance
- Assisted the FAA in developing a Memorandum of Agreement with the Sitka Tribe
