Cultural and Natural Resource Services for Level 3 Communications Fiber Optic Project
Utah and Nevada

Overview:
Level (3) Communications Fiber Optics Project contracted SWCA to monitor, test and conduct data recovery excavations of 100 NRHP-eligible archaeological sites located within a 440 mile long construction corridor from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. In addition, in Nevada SWCA also conducted Desert Tortoise and cactus monitoring and re-vegetation. The project lasted two years and involved a staff of over 100 SWCA natural and cultural resource specialists.

Services Provided:

  • Conducted Section 7 consultation and construction monitoring
  • Fulfilled Bureau of Land Management (BLM) mitigation requirements for vegetation salvage and replanting of cactus and Joshua trees
  • Tested and conducted data recovery excavation at 100 archaeological sites
  • Worked with the construction companies to develop re-routes to reduce or avoid impacts to archaeological sites
  • Conducted total station mapping of archaeological sites
  • Analyzed the artifacts collected during excavations
  • Prepared a report that included the results of monitoring, testing and data recovery excavations at 100 archaeological sites for Utah and Nevada

Results:
As a direct result of the SWCA SLC office's reputation for conducting large-scale projects, SWCA worked with both the client and state and federal agency representatives (USHPO, NSHPO, UBLM, NBLM), to conduct the archaeological monitoring, testing, excavation, analysis and reporting tasks for the fiber optic project.
