Vanport Wetland Mitigation Design, Permitting, and Monitoring in Portland, OR
Portland, Oregon

Overview:
SWCA provided the Port of Portland with mitigation monitoring for 62 acres of wetlands and 28 acres of upland habitat. SWCA was involved early on in the Vanport project's history to evaluate the mitigation and cost/benefit potential of several large sites for the Port of Portland and then by participating in the selection process that ultimately chose the site in 1998.

Services Provided
:
  • Designed the mitigation's enhancement of the 62-acre "lakebed" wetland that included a multi-year effort aimed at reed canarygrass control and subsequent revegetation with native emergent species adapted to extended durations of shallow inundation.
  • Assisted in designing and implementing enhancement of Vanport's approximately 30 acres of uplands degraded by numerous invasive species

Results:

As a result of SWCA’s mitigation design, both the wetlands and uplands of the Vanport site are currently dominated by native species, attracting over 100 species of wildlife each year. SWCA annually monitors the seven individual Port permit projects currently being implemented at the site and prepares annual monitoring reports for permit compliance. In addition, SWCA is the Port's on-going technical services consultant for all natural resource issues related to Vanport. In 2004, the Oregon State Land Board awarded the Port of Portland the Wetland Project Award for their “outstanding work in improving Oregon's wetlands habitat.”
