Places That Count: Identifying and Managing
Traditional Cultural Properties (2 days)
Traditional Cultural Properties, or TCPs, are places in the environment that have special significance to human communities because of their cultural connections; examples include indigenous sacred places, traditional hunting and fishing areas, and culturally valued urban neighborhoods. TCPs are often eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and must be managed under the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. This course will help you understand how properties are identified as TCPs and why they can be so highly valued by traditional communities. The course will also cover ways of managing properties without identifying them, since their significance is sometimes kept secret by those who value them.
