About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for a Staff Civil Engineer to add to our expanding team in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This crucial supporting role focuses on developing project deliverables primarily for oil and gas and renewable energy projects. As a Staff Civil Engineer, you will be tasked with designing site layouts, erosion and sediment control best management practices, stormwater management, project narratives and supporting calculations and learning project management tasks. These responsibilities will be paired assisting in the engineering design process, contributing to permit and construction drawings, and providing technical support across various projects. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, subcontractors and stakeholders will be a fundamental aspect of your role.

This is a full-time, permanent position offering benefits and flexibility for hybrid/remote work arrangements for qualified candidates in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

What you will accomplish

  • Assist in engineering design and development of plan sets for oil and gas and solar developments.
  • Participate in field work for site assessments, erosion control inspections, surveys, and observation.
  • Utilize AutoDesk Civil 3D for plan development.
  • Conduct hydraulic, hydrologic, and water quality assessments.
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate with the Project Manager to maintain project schedules and budgets.
  • Attend design training sessions for skill development.
  • Work independently and with the project team to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Perform tasks under supervision, including design, drafting, and research.
  • Assist in permit applications, drawings, calculations, report preparation and CAD work.
  • Communicate with clients and regulatory agencies as directed.
  • Ensure safety plan implementation in field operations.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and civil site design principles.
  • Ability to work independently collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Flexibility to travel, including short-term overnight stays, for various project related tasks.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Hydraflow Hydrographs or equivalent, Storm and Sanitary Sewer Analysis.
  • Experience in supporting proposal development and client management activities.

An employee in this Pittsburgh, PA based position can expect an hourly pay rate of $30.50-$39.59/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
