SWCA Expands Historic Preservation Services with Key Hires in California
Navigating cultural resources just got easier. Meet Garret Root and Dan Herrick, two seasoned experts now supporting SWCA clients in California. With decades of preservation experience, they’re ready to guide your project and meet regulatory needs.
When it comes to cultural resources management, proven expertise is key. We’re pleased to share the recent addition of two qualified professionals in California to help you navigate regulatory obligations, design a project in a historic district, or mitigate impacts to a historic resource. Garret Root and Dan Herrick bring decades of experience in historic preservation, preservation planning, architectural history, and history support. Both meet and exceed the Secretary of Interior’s professional qualification standards for architectural history and history. Their experience and expertise complement our broader cultural resources team across California and the west.

Garret Root co-leads SWCA’s architectural history practice in California and has 13 years of experience in architectural history, research, and regulatory compliance relating to the built environment. He has extensive knowledge in all facets of project development, including methodology development and area of potential effects (APE) development, research, intensive survey, field recordation and management, report documentation, and agency review. As a practicing preservation professional in the western U.S., Dan Herrick is proficient in documenting and evaluating cultural resources and preparing Secretary of the Interior’s Standards analyses. He has completed a variety of historic preservation planning documents for projects throughout California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Great Basin region. He is also well versed in evaluating historic districts, assessing cultural landscapes, drafting design guidelines, and providing recommendations for context-sensitive infill construction projects.
