With his unwavering #OneSWCA attitude, Ken volunteered to support the Denver office in local field studies. While in the field, Ken noticed a cloud forming in a manner that was conducive to tornado formation. Leaning into his meteorological background and safety first mindset, Ken opted to leave the site early and return when conditions improved to continue his task. As he was about to depart the site, a small tornado touched down in the distance. Ken was already on the interstate driving away from the tornado and towards his hotel when the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. The tornado blew up a sandstorm in the area, which Ken was able to observe from the safety of his vehicle. Ken’s quick thinking, weather knowledge, and proactive attitude ensured he was safe and out of the way when it counted most.

Safety Star Program

The Safety Star Program rewards employees who demonstrate safe behavior and provides employees an opportunity to recognize the exemplary efforts of others by nominating coworkers. The great stories submitted provide us with an opportunity to learn more about the hazards our colleagues face both on and off the job, and the positive actions performed to help mitigate those hazards.

While safety is every employee’s responsibility, a “Safety Star” displays exceptional efforts in safety.
