While heading out to the field early in the morning, Jonathan and Danielle were at a green light, preparing to turn onto the highway. Jonathan had the right of way, but following safe driving practices, he observed a semi-truck down the road that appeared not to be stopping. Acting quickly, he halted his turn and signaled to the truck with his horn. The truck failed to stop and, unfortunately, struck another car at the intersection.

Finding a safe place to pull off the road, Jonathan and Danielle, both former EMTs, rendered aid to the driver struck by the semi. Jonathan instructed a bystander to call emergency services and assessed the risk of a potential vehicle fire, while Danielle assisted the driver and evaluated them for any major injuries. They remained at the scene to provide statements to the police before reporting the accident through SWCA’s safety reporting app and continuing on to the field.

Jonathan’s vigilance and safe driving prevented a bad accident from becoming even worse. More importantly, both Jonathan and Danielle demonstrated their ability to remain calm under pressure, finding a safe place to pull over, assessing the overall situation, and assisting the accident victim while waiting for help to arrive. This incident highlights their ability to recognize hazards and take decisive action.

Danielle and Jonathan’s hazard recognition and adherence to defensive driving practices kept them safe during an impending accident. Their combined efforts helped support a crash victim in a life-altering situation.

Safety Star Program

The Safety Star Program rewards employees who demonstrate safe behavior and provides employees an opportunity to recognize the exemplary efforts of others by nominating coworkers. The great stories submitted provide us with an opportunity to learn more about the hazards our colleagues face both on and off the job, and the positive actions performed to help mitigate those hazards.

While safety is every employee’s responsibility, a “Safety Star” displays exceptional efforts in safety.
